We live in an era where social media plays a huge role in everyone's life. From sharing pictures and videos to promoting your business to just letting your thoughts out and most importantly the sharing of ground-breaking news in a flash! It is probably the most important tool that mankind has ever got access to.I guess it also has an addictive factor to it where you can keep scrolling down for hours, wasting valuable amount of time because the algorithm is designed to keep you intact. There are so many social media platforms out there like YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp,TIK-TOK(This one is not social), etc, each one with there own purpose.I guess Facebook and Instagram are the most direct and personal since they are basically connecting you to people you know or at least are supposed to know and supposed to be friends with.
Facebook was the first social media platform that I directly used and directly interacted with.It was a long time ago and I was very excited by it.I remember when it used to be more simple.Friends used to talk about it all the time at school, friend requests were cool and chats were just funny.Want to upload a picture?Bam you upload what ever you want.Want to post something?Bam you just post what ever you want without giving two shits.Remember when you went back from school and were just excited to see what are your friends posting on facebook? It was so normal entertaining and funny at that time.Comparison were just for fun, pictures were just for fun, posts were just for fun.Not because it was necessary but because it was stupid. But now days it is very easy to get manipulated by it.
No one really talks about it but social media anxiety is a real thing and it is a problem that can destroy a person mentally and there are so many reasons behind it and the factors depend on so many things.Social media was made to connect people from different corners of the world and it successfully did its job but it also made people very one dimensional. What started as something fun, developed into something very mentally sinister and exhausting. It became a game of numbers, stats and popularity.People became fake and in turn manipulated other people to be fake just to remain relevant. The fake life style, the forced positivity, the lack of real conversation, the edited to perfection images took control. But what does being relevant even mean?Is it just the process of receiving lots of likes and comments?I guess I factor in it too as their are countless times that i have judged people based on their social media traction."OH MY GOD this person has a cool life and such a better life than mine!""My life sucks""OH this person sucks, his social media is DEAD!" These are the one dimensional thoughts that eat a human from inside, the comparisons and the judgement brought down to a number and a life style that you do not even care about. And then comes the loss of self-esteem when you start feeling low .Your life starts to feel worthless and you start feeling like a nobody and then you want the same amount of popularity.Just because we assume we are irrelevant, we start to do things that do not define us be it posting pictures, posts, interest, locations, etc in ways that we do not care about. What started as something casual and fun became a constant grind for attention which became a strain. The low likes and comments the lack of traction only resulted in loss of self believe, lack of freedom, depression, stress, mental exhaustion, etc. This is behavior is pretty much a Bootstrap Paradox as it has no beginning or end, an endless loop that consumes even the most honest people.Everyone is scared of being judged by their social status which in turn causes the anxiety. We care about the response way too much.
And is it worth it?No.Do the likes matter?Do the comments matter?I think what matters is the thought process and the context behind our actions. We cannot change who we are based on the lifestyle of other people, we cannot become someone else and we certainly cannot define our lives and our relevancy based on a picture or a post or the amount of likes and followers. It was very hard for me to get through this phase of pure despair and suffering but I am glad that I made it out of the cesspool of social media and now I really realize that I do not really care anymore. It feels really good when you do not compare yourself to others and you stop defining your self based on a social media statistic.I feel much more happy now that I barely use Facebook and Instagram and thank god that I have never touched Snapchat.I think that people like me have been using social media wrong. We are not supposed be active competitors.I like being a occasional observer. No one is perfect and everyone has problems in their lives, some more than others.Just because a popular dude on Facebook or Instagram has lots of positive posts does not mean he/she is actually happy with their life and have no real problems.I think everyone should work on their own self development instead of getting obsessed and depressed by some posts on social media. That is why I prefer social sites like Quora,Reddit and Twitter more due to them being more of an community and the opportunities they provide to interact with new people! People suffering from this social media bootstrap paradox should shut off their social media for a few days and notice the difference it makes in their life.It is important to just appreciate social media and not obsess over it.
